Description

By day: ordinary gray stone. By UV light: GLOWING ORANGE FIRE. Welcome to the wild world of Yooperlite.

This Yooperlite Gemstone Dice Set features one of nature's most dramatic transformations. These dice are carved from genuine Yooperlite, a sodalite-rich syenite rock discovered along the shores of Lake Superior in 2017. In normal lighting, they look like standard gray igneous rock, unassuming and subtle. But shine a UV light on them, and suddenly they burst into brilliant orange, yellow, and red-orange flames like they contain an inner fire.

The discovery story is legendary: In 2017, Michigan rockhound Erik Rintamaki was scanning Lake Superior's shoreline at night with a UV light when he noticed certain beach stones suddenly glowed in intense orange patterns. He coined and later trademarked the name "Yooperlite"—combining "Yooper" (the nickname for residents of Michigan's Upper Peninsula) with "-lite" (echoing mineral naming plus the idea of glowing light). The discovery sparked a regional phenomenon and a whole new niche in rockhounding.

The science behind the glow: The fluorescence is caused by impurities in the sodalite structure, especially disulfide ions, which act as chemical activators. When exposed to UV light, the sodalite absorbs electromagnetic radiation at the UV wavelength and re-emits it in a longer wavelength, appearing as yellow, orange, red, or pink. The effect is instant, dramatic, and absolutely mesmerizing—like watching veins of molten lava appear across the stone's surface.

Dual-nature beauty: What makes Yooperlite dice so special is their dual personality. In regular light, they have a subtle, natural gray stone appearance with darker and lighter variations, perfect for players who prefer understated aesthetics. But bring out a UV flashlight (especially a 365nm long-wave UV light), and suddenly your dice transform into glowing artifacts that look like they're channeling elemental fire magic.

Every die is unique: Because these are carved from natural stone, each die features its own pattern of fluorescent sodalite distribution. Some might glow more intensely, others might show different patterns of orange and yellow. These natural variations make your set genuinely one-of-a-kind.

Artisanal craftsmanship: Each die is hand-carved from authentic Yooperlite and hand-painted with elegant gold numbers that show clearly in both normal and UV light. Minor variations in shapes and number placement may occur due to the handcrafted nature.

Handle with care: Like all gemstone dice, Yooperlites are more fragile than resin or acrylic. A soft dice tray is highly recommended to protect your dice and table. Store carefully to prevent chipping, though the padded leather case helps with that.

Premium leather storage: This set comes with a padded leather storage case featuring individual compartments for each die. Each die gets its own protective slot, preventing scratches and chips while looking absolutely premium. Perfect for safe transport or elegant display.

Complete 7-piece set: Includes D4, D6, D8, D10, D%, D12, and D20—all carved from genuine Yooperlite with gold numbering, all ready to reveal their hidden glow.

Perfect for: Collectors of unique dice, players who love dual-purpose aesthetics, characters with fire or light magic, anyone fascinated by fluorescent minerals, UV light enthusiasts, geology lovers, gift-giving to rockhounds and gamers, or anyone who wants dice with a literal hidden power that activates on command.
